Bottle Shops

Colorado Liquor Mart
865 South Colorado Blvd
Denver, CO 80222
303.744.9500

As soon as you walk in the door you're greeted by a handful of obscure little gems, priced under $10 from Spain.   This immediately told me that owner Tim Burke knows, no matter what the customer's income level, most of us love a good bottle of wine under $10.   As you walk the aisles you find many terrific bottles of wine in the $10 and under price range as well as bottles priced for special occasions and collecting.   Colorado Liquor Mart has "Superstore" pricing and Mr. Burke or any of his staff can assist you with recommendations at any price range.   While I was there he assisted a woman with a mixed case of wine.   Her parameters were $10 and under.   After she left, he revealed to me that case averaged $8.60 a bottle.   Judging by the selection on the shelves, she's going to be very, very pleased.   There is an art to finding those inexpensive, everyday bottles of wine and Colorado Liquor Mart is a gallery for those very bottles.

Divino
1240 South Broadway
Denver, CO 80210
303.778.1800

The moment you open the door you're drawn into this shop.   It's cozy and hip, with inviting nooks for reading, great music, soft lighting, and tastefully decorated walls.
Oh . . . did I forget to mention the wine?   The wine selections are a comprehensive slice of the world.   Good choices from the obscure to the trendy and not a single bottle of "Trophy Wine" in the lot.   On the walls and racks are many undiscovered gems, from those under-valued regions, such as Spain, South Africa, The Rhône Valley, and Argentina. The prices are competitive with larger stores.   On top of that, Divino throws a great Monthly Wine Tasting at Hanson's Grill and Tavern on Pearl Street, third Tuesday each month.   Any one that happens to travel South on Broadway should check this store out, especially if you live within a few miles of I25 and Broadway near Gates Rubber.   If you're a Wine Shop Connoisseur, then a visit to this little shop is a must.   The stores is on the East side of the street.   Click to see a map.

This is the kind of shop that inspires people to shop for wine.

Hawaii Liquor Superstores

intersection of C.B. and Potts
Take a look at this map.

The folks at Hawaii Liquor Superstore really know wine.   I found my attention hopping from bottle to bottle with an "Oh, I love this wine . . . this is a great bottle too . . . Wow, this one is a steal for the price . . . ."   A person could spend days exploring all the selections before making a purchasing decision.   It is refreshing to find a large store driven by a skilled palate.   Too many large stores are driven by what Parker likes or what The Wine Spectator recommends and they don't take a personal interest in what they are selling.   This store is filled with wines that have been tasted by the management and staff and given their stamp of approval.   You can actually have a conversation about what a wine tastes like and why it would be appropriate for your occasion.   And speaking of occasions,  Hawaii Liquor Superstore does a spectacular job with event planning and delivers with a $50 minimum purchase within a five mile area.   Whether you're planning a wedding or dinner party, looking to find some gems for your cellar, or just looking for a great bottle of wine for this evening, Hawaii Liquor Superstore is a must for anyone in the Interlocken, Broomfield, Louisville, Lafayette, Thornton area.

Libations
Arapahoe Crossings
6554 South Parker Road
Aurora, CO 80016
303.766.0575

If you're wondering what my wine cellar would look like, if I had the space and money for several thousand bottles, just take a good look around this shop.   Each notable grape growing region is represented with thoughtfully chosen, well priced items.   The selection of wines and knowledgeable staff left me with the impression that you could shop at Libations exclusively and never get bored.   This is an impressive feat for a smaller store.   Plus, the ambiance is inviting.   It is the definition of a "bottle shop," cozy and clean, with tasteful artwork on the walls.   I found the beer selection to be as thoughtful and deliberate as the wine selection.   Many Oenophiles love a refreshing bottle of beer now and again, which proves a developed palate knows no boundaries when it comes to Libations.

Mondo Vino
3601 West 32nd Avenue
Denver, CO 80211
303.458.3858

Mondo Vino is a great wine shop in the Renaissance neighborhood of Highland Village.   Surrounded by other interesting shops and restaurants, you could justify an afternoon of shopping and dinning, but who are we kidding?   We're really only here for the wine.
This shop's offerings are eclectic and thoughtfully chosen.   I really like the layout, it causes me to orbit the displays and take in all those enticing labels.   It's funky and downtown.   The pricing is not pretentious and is competitive to larger stores.   The wine staff are very knowledgeable and love to assist you with selections from their impressive inventory.   If you live near the Highlands area this store should be your next wine or beer shopping experience.
