Parusso
Paolo Scavino
      Parusso 2000 Barbera Superiore
Is an exceptional Italian red from Piedmont.   The fruit is jammy with notes of strawberry and raspberries.   There is a sensual leather and earth component that works well with the ample acid structure.   There was also a very soft, comforting milk chocolate note on the mid-palate as well.   The oak is prominent, yet offers toasted flavors that marry well with the brighter fruit flavors.   All around this wine offers much in the way of structure with its ripe fruit flavors, its spice, acidity, and tannins.   Parusso Barbera is an exceptional barbera that would pair well with heartier foods that need acidity as well as foods that want for an elegant wine.
Retail price $35.   Tasted September 24, 2003.   Exceptional, elegant, proof that a barbera can be a work of art earning three out of three .

      Parusso Bussia Rocche 1999 Barolo
is an impressive red from the Piedmont region of Barolo offering wonderful flavors and great structure.   The nose is bright with flavors of roses and toasted flavors.   On the palate the wine has exotic notes of dried berries, truffles, and cinnamon, as ground herbs and a touch of tar round out the finish.   The acidity is perfect for food as each sip of wine cleanses the palate making each bite of food taste like the first.   Elegant and bold, young in spirit, ready for the dinner table or a few years in the cellar.
Retail price $80.   Tasted September 24, 2003.   Impressive, an event on it's own earning three out of three .

      Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric 1999
A great representation of a "New World" style nebbiolo based wine, Scavino Barolo Carobric is softer and smoother than your traditional style Barolos.   On the palate the wine has soft, sweet raspberries.   The tannins are smoother and the acidity is balanced to the more approachable style.    Although the style is not as bold, this wine does not lack in flavor.    Roasted flavors of nuts and smoke grace the palate as bright fruits advance on the mid-palate.   The finish is sultry with white pepper, spice, and rosehips.
Retail price $80.   Tasted September 24, 2003.   Elegant, this softer style Barolo is a crowd pleaser earning three out of three .

      Paolo Scavino 1999 Cannubi Barolo
A softer Barolo with smooth acidity and tannins reflecting Enrico Scavino's winemaking philosophy.   The fruit is ripe wild cherry, rosehips, coffee, and smoke.   The use of large oak vessels, with only 20-40 new, creates a gentle spice and roasted herb flavor.   This is very smooth, very approachable, a great bottle for tonights meal, a stellar bottle with a few more years of aging.   Clean varietal characteristics, "New World" softness, showing classic acidity.
Retail price $80.   Tasted September 24, 2003.   A gem earning three out of three .

Paolo Scavino Barolo "Bric del Fiasc" 1999
The "New World" soft flavors shine in this Barolo.   The red fruits are prominent, such as raspberries, strawberries, and wild cherries, which compliment the acidity and tannins.   There are classic dried herb and cedar flavors on the mid-palate.   The Barolo grown nebbiolo still shows true characteristics, while the winemakers style allows this red to be drunk now, cellaring for 5-8 years will allow it to evolve into an even greater gem.
Retail price $80.   Tasted September 24, 2003.   A great bottle now or in years to come earning two out of three .
