Did you miss Race For The Cure?
You can still make a difference. Bloom is donating a portion of their profits from each bottle of wine purchased in the month of October and November. Enjoy a bottle of Bloom Rielsing with your favorite spicy fare or pick up a bottle of Bloom Pinot Gris to pair with your favorite chicken or seafood dish. Bloom Riesling makes a splendid wine for turkey.

Bloom 2004 Riesling, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany
This is great riesling at at a modest price. Big floral aromas escape from the glass. Flavors of lime zest, apricots, and minerals are intense. This white has a touch of residual sugar and its acidity compliments the fruitiness. It lingers in the mouth with a touch of exotic spices. The Stelvin closure keeps this wine fresh. The perfect bottle to go with take out from Wild Ginger. Don't forget Bloom is donating a portion from each sale to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation during October and November.
Tasted October 11, 2006.

Bogle 2003 Phantom Old Vine, California
A blend of old vine zinfandel, old vine petite sirah, and old vine mourvedre. Aromas of spice and tobacco lead to intense flavors on the palate. Notes of blueberries, tar, coffee beans, vanilla, and cranberries. These old vines offer dense flavors that start at the nose and continue to the finish. This is an incredible value comparing the quality to the price. The label makes a great item for the adult trick-or-treaters.

Guelbenzu 2003 Azul Tierra Ribera del Queiles, Spain
Wonderful nose on this wine, lovely berries and rose aromas. This wine is a blend of tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot. This wine is a blueberry canvas with hints of cherry brandy. Great structure, balanced tannins with a good dose of acidity. -BF $15

OVZ 2004, California
This juice comes from one hundred year vines. Jammy, dense, with notes of dark chocolate, raspberries, and coffee with cream. The tannins and acidity offer a good backbone to the intense fruit flavors. This is a great value for the money.

Château Trocard 2003 Bordeaux Superior, France
This is a sultry bottle of red. Soft red fruit flavors of cherries and raspberries come from the merlot content. It is smooth, with notes of graphite, plum, and cherry skins on the finish. The tannins are soft. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc, this is not a new world fruit bomb, but rather a sophisticated red blend with subtlties. If you're a fan of Bordeaux, this is a bottle for you. If you're not familiar with Bordeaux, this is a great bottle to explore.

Le Cadeau 2003 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Made by Isabelle Dutartre, a French winemaker with Oregon experience, this shows restraint despite the big, ripe fruit characteristic of the vintage. Cumin and lemongrass leapt from the glass; Tom called it 'Asian spices.' Blackberry emerges on the nose and palate. Licorice tones come through on the tongue as well. Grapes from the entire vineyard comprised this blend. -MAM $40

San Luis Valley Brewing Company
Angie Graber, Brewmaster of San Luis Valley Brewing Company, enthusiastically shared her story and explained her beers at the Thursday evening session of the Great American Beer Festival.
Graber majored in microbiology and is fascinated by the brewing process. For three years prior to opening the brewery, she brewed at home. She and her husband took a home-brewing course in Durango, which ignited her passion even more.
In April 2006, together with her husband and whole family, she opened The San Luis Valley Restaurant and Brewery. The beers – and the logo – are a celebration of the valley’s community, and perhaps account for the immediate success of the establishment.
Local artist Chris Krisgosar designed the logo. Mountains on either side of the sun commemorate those surrounding the valley; barley rises from the center. Fields anchor the design as farming anchors the community, and hops vines curl through them.
In response to the popularity of Corona in the valley, Graber created a Mexican Lager using a Mexican yeast. Well-rounded, it has more body than a Corona.
In the warm weather, Graber’s 'Hefe Suave' was the best seller. An unfiltered American style wheat beer, it is cloudy, with a citrus/lemon taste. In Spanish, 'Hefe Suave' translates to 'smooth boss,'which has become a running joke.
The chocolaty ’Old 169’ recalls a train on display in a local park. It boasts malt flavors reminiscent of Ovaltine. The sign next to the Grand River IPA read, “Pleasant bite with a clean finish.” I agree. My favorite is Graber’s Alamosa Amber. Balanced malt and hops lead to a long aftertaste. Beers on tap change with the season, and may include a steam or fruit beer.
For a taste of local flavor, The San Luis Valley Restaurant and Brewery is located at 631 Main Street, Alamosa, CO. (South-Central CO, off of US 160, about 30 miles north of the New Mexico border.) 719-587-BEER

Left Hand Milk Stout, Longmont, Colorado
Ah yes, creamy smooth, like a malted milk for adults. Roasted flavors and notes of chocolate and coffee are seemless in this very velvety brew. Dark and rich with hints of floral hops on the finish. Forget about dessert, I'm having a Left Hand Milk Stout.
-BF $8 a sixer

Grand Tetons Bitch Creek ESB, Wyoming
This is a well interated Extra Special Bitter. It is layered with caramel and roasted flavors and floral notes. Good balance shows maltiness, yet a hoppy bitter, spiciness.
