Louis Latour, 2004 Valmoissine, Pinot Noir, Burgundy, France
A fine example of Burgundy that doesn't break the bank. The color is light and the aroma is floral. On the palate there are bright notes of wild cherries and seductive flavors of dried rose petals. This is an elegant red with prominent acidity and soft tannins.
Tasted November 2, 2006.

Rosenblum 2002 Fess Parker Syrah, Santa Barbara, California
This is a densely flavored syrah. The black raspberry canvas peaks through prominent flavors of pencil shavings and kiffer lime. It is sultry with a good dose of acid on the finish. The tannins are soft. A special bottle of red that would go well with food.

Red Zeppelin 2004 Bear Valley Ranch & O'Neil Vineyard, Central Coast Syrah
This is a spicy syrah. Aromas of blueberries prevail on the nose. On the palate clove, patchouli, cinnamon, and berry jam are symphony of flavors with vanilla chiming in on the finish. Great acidity is followed by soft tannins. The label is a conversation starter, the wine is solid.

Wine Tasting Themes
Wine tasting parties are very popular these days. Some are a freestyle kind of gathering, with attendees contributing any kind of wine. Others are more structured and guests are asked to bring wine from specific categories.
Choosing a category for your guests can be tricky. To maximize your learning opportunity, choose an area for your theme, rather than a grape. In particular, choose an area in Europe. Spain, Italy, or France because they are vast when it comes to wine selections. Each county spans all the wine styles, offering sparkling wines, rosés, whites, reds, and dessert wines. Here are some suggestions that will offer your wine tasting group a great diversity with a theme.
Throw an Italian wine tasting, but exclude Chianti and pinot grigio and see what creative bottles your guests bring to the table. Remind your guests not to forget about the island states of Sicily and Sardinia.

Joel Gott Cabernet 2004 Sauvignon, California
Last night was the first time I've tasted this wine. Boy, this is an impressive cabernet sauvignon for the money. It drinks like a $40 bottle for under $20. Flavors of black cherry skins, spring rain, plum, and graphite. Layered, interesting, attention-getting, buy two, you won't be disappointed.

Bodega Campante 2005 Viña Reboreda, Spain Spain conjures up images of hot, sunny weather, perfect for growing red grapes. If you've dabbled in Spanish wines you know that their reds are exceptional. What many people don't know is that Espana create some delightful white wines. Viña Reboreda from Bodega Campante is a tasty, versatile white wine. Aromas of Spring blossom carry over to the palate. In the mouth it is dazzling with flavors of lime zest and honey. Exotic and soft, it offers a decent spark of acidity.

Dr. Bürklin-Wolf 2004 Old Vine Riesling, Pfalz Germany
This riesling is exceptional quality for the money. Exotic, mouth-filling, flavors of lime and lemon zest, apricots, and green apples. The flavors are bright and the acidity is refreshing. The intense flavors showcase the old vine grapes. Buy a bottle and pick up some spicy Thai or Vietnamese food for a perfect pair.

Riesling
I overheard a friend proclaim "if I was only allowed to drink one white wine for the rest of my life, I think it would be riesling." I tend to agree with him. Riesling covers all the bases. It's known for its alluring aromas of freshly cut fruit and honeysuckle. When you stick your nose in a glass of riesling you understand why they call it bouquet. I'll bet the first time they used the word 'layered' when describing a wine they were drinking riesling. It's always complex and can taste clean and refreshing, to exotic and completely distracting. Its finish crescendos in your mouth.
Riesling has a wide palate of flavors to draw from like apples, peaches, apricots, mangos, tangerines, and limes. It also has a perfume-like floral side and often suggests a twinkle of minerality. Mouthwatering acidity offers a compliment to the intense fruit and distinct honey flavors.
Germany has many levels of ripeness and quality with its pinnacle offering being made from frozen, late harvest grapes, a glorious elixir called Eiswein. As a dessert wine, riesling tastes like a liquid sunset, vivid, dazzling, and intensifying.

Vocabulary

Each week we'll include a few wine (or beer or spirits) terms. To read more terms go to the vocabulary page. This page will grow as we add more terms.

Corked:
2,4,6-trichloroanisole, or TCA is a mold taint that comes from infected corks. This mold is so prevalent that it can infect an entire winery. It is a difficult eradicate because it thrives on bleach. When a bottle of wine is severely tainted, or corked, it can taste like wet dog, mildew, wet cardboard, or ground up rubber bands. As revolting as a corked bottle can taste, TCA starts out as a loss of fruitiness with no ill flavor.

Finish:
The lingering impression a wine leaves after it is swallowed (or spit) is referred to as the finish. The finish is part of a wine's structure. A finish can offer flavorw that were prominent on the palate, or offer different impressions. Some wines have a long finish with evolving flavors, such as better quality rieslings. Wines that have a non-existing or short finish are considered flawed.
Hang Time:
A slang word referring to the amount of time grapes are able to hang on the vine to ripen. It also infers a long slow ripening. Most grapes benefit from long, slow ripening, but some grapes, like pinot noir, require it. Long hang time happens when the weather is optimal.
Terroir (tare-wahr):
is the subtle component that is often absent in new world wines. Terroir is the flavor of the land, weather, and environment. It is often called aspect. It is the slight flavor of rocks, chalk, autumn leaves, spring rain, dust, baked earth, ocean breeze or minerals. Terroir is destroyed by sulfites that are added when the grapes are first crushed. It is also diminished by the quick ripening that happens in hot growing regions. A whopping alcohol level is a sign that the delicate flavors of terroir are lost. Aspect of the land is an old world occurrence. More and more new world producers try to preserve terroir in their wines. The best examples of terroir can be found in European wines.

Left Hand Black Jack Porter, Longmont, CO
It's dark color infers a rich brew. On the palate the flavors deliver what the eye anticipated. Black licorice, roasted coffee, chocolate, smoke, and cassis sweetness carry forward to a crisp, clean finish. It densely flavored, yet is quaffable enough to more than one. I let mine warm up a bit.

Odell Brewing Five Barrel Pale Ale
Pale ales can be all over the place, some leaning more toward an IPA with their use of hops. Five Barrel is a fine example of what pale ale should be. Medium carbonation with good body and a bright copper color. It is smooth and creamy, with integrated flavors. Sweet caramel flavors are backed up by citrus-floral notes. The bitterness on the finish is perfectly biting.

Firenze a Tavola cordially invites you to our next wine tasting and dinner. Thursday, November 16, 6:30 pm We are very excited to be offering the wines of one Northern Italy's most interesting producers: Dorigo We will be featuring five wines and five fabulous courses of paired food. The Dorigo winery was created in 1966 with the purchase of two vineyards, Ronc di Juri at Buttrio and Montsclapade. The winemaking potential of the terrain was immediately obvious. Dorigo believes that, in more than three decades of work, they now understand that it takes quality-focused viticulture to produce superior fruit. And only a shrewdly judged mix of tradition, history, and high technology can transform that fruit in the cellar into a great wine. We will have available the Brut, the Tazzelanghe, the Montsclapade and the amazingly rare Pignolo all for your enjoyment. All wines will be whole heartedly presented by Friulian wine specialist Tim Wanner and importer of Dorigo wines. To aid in the appreciation of the wines we will be featuring the exquisite cuisine of the Friulian area via the talent of our chef, Gabriel Aragon.
Price is $115 per person all inclusive. Please RSVP immediately to Mathew or Simone at 303-561-0234, as space is very limited. We look forward to seeing you soon! Parisi Restaurant and Firenze a Tavola
