Petite Sirah
According to the Wine Institute, there are over 75,000 acres of cabernet, over 50,000 acres of merlot, over 50,000 acres of zinfandel, but only about 4,400 acres of petite sirah, growing in California. Add to those figures the fact that many of us have never heard of petite sirah, or mistakenly think it is syrah; you've got to wonder, 'why would anyone bother with such an obscure grape?'
Winemakers don't make wine from petite sirah because they think they're going to make a lot of money, or because they think it is going to gain them a rock star reputation. They make wine from petite sirah because they love the varietal.
Petite sirah has only been around 124 years. Its real name is Durif, after its creator, French botanist, François Durif. Durif was created by crossing syrah and peloursin, an old, obscure French varietal. Grape growers in the United States adopted the French nickname, petite sirah, for this varietal, although you'll see either name used on Californian labels.
Its wine is saturated in purple color, with dense notes of blueberry, blackberry, smoke, and black pepper. It can be rather tannic and usually improves when permitted to breathe an hour or so. The concentration of fruit compliments the tannic nature. Petite sirah is similar to syrah just like any other parent-child relationship.
Many petite sirah vineyards are considered "old vine," a proud designation that denotes density of fruit flavors, mineral hints, and a cellar worthy structure. An old vine will produce at a fraction of a younger vine. Grape production, for all grape varietals, drops significantly when the vines reach 25 - 30 years old.
This may explain why there aren't that many old vine vineyards out there. When grape production slows to a crawl, the vines where ripped up and replaced, usually with whatever variety is in vogue at the time.
Fortunately for us, there are passionate winemakers, who love old vine zinfandel, carignane, morvedre, and petite sirah. These bottles of wine are often fantastic values, because they are a labor of love, not a vehicle in which to make money. For the savvy consumer non-mainstream varietals like petite sirah, reveal high quality wine at a reasonable price.
