Shaw and Smith
Shaw and Smith 2002 Sauvignon Blanc  from the Adelaide Hills has huge grapefruitiness on the nose.   On the palate this wine has flavors of kiwi, melon, and gooseberry.   The flavors are full, rich, and layered.   The acidity, fruit, and dryness are very balanced and the finish is zesty.   If I were to blind-taste this wine, I would swear it was a New Zealand sauv-blanc.
Retail price $16.   Tasted August 22, 2003.   Two .

Shaw and Smith 2002 Unoaked Chardonnay  is a refreshing change of pace.   The nose is citrus and apples.   On the palate the fruit is bright and clean.   Flavors of key lime zest, star fruit, papaya, and minerals.   The acidity is perfect for pairing with food.   Shaw and Smith use no malolactic fermentation or oak when producing this chardonnay.   If you're looking for unoaked chardonnay, this is a great bottle of wine.
Retail price $15.   Tasted August 22, 2003.   Two .

Hill of Content Grenache-Shiraz 2000  is 82% grenache, with a blending of 2/3 Clare Valley fruit and 1/3 McLaren Vale fruit.   Again, this is another "old vine" bottle of wine that has that sultry depth that comes from the persistent grapevine roots growing deeper and deeper into the earth.   It has a very smooth and refined presence on the palate with raspberries and red pepper notes.   The finish is savory, like rosehips.
Retail price is $13.   Tasted August 22, 2003.   A solid choice earning one .

Wirra Wirra 2001 Scrubby Rise Red  is an inexpensive meaty red with plenty of spice and wild cherry flavors.   A faint smokeyness and leather show themselves in the acid charater, while cherry flavors keep the rest of your tongue busy.
Retail price $9.   Tasted August 20, 2003.   One red star for a red star .

2000 Mak Coonawarra Cabernet Sauviginon, Shiraz, Merlot Blend is Yarra Yerring's declassifed field blend.   This wine shows all the funky flavors that Yarra Yering's Cab and Shiraz based wines show.   The black currant, ripe cherry, spearmint, and vanilla evolve in your mouth as the finish lingers with a touch of black pepper and berry jam.
Rated August 1, 2003. We gave this wine two .

1999 Penley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe with flavors. This wine has a great structure as well as providing interesting mouthfeel and very ripe black currant and black cherry favors.
Rated August 1, 2003. We gave this wine two .
