Dominio De Tares 2003 Bierzo, Leon, Spain
You could say that mencia,
one of Spain's many obscure grape varieties,
is on the endangered species list.
With the frenzy for merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the American market,
many unknown varieties are being replaced for the more recognizable grapes
in order to sell in our market.
How boring would the world be if we only had chocolate cake for dessert?
Lucky for us, the Spanish are slower to replace their native grapes for mainstream varieties.
These mencia vines are 40 years old, offering dense layered flavors.
This red is a blackberry canvas with notes of bitter chocolate,
black pepper, with a sultry use of oak.
It is a delicious change of pace.
Discover this tasty red with lots of personality. -BF
